The West Texas A&M chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) provides students with an opportunity to gain knowledge and insight into the effective management of human capital. With over forty active members (including several online-only students) and six officers, SHRM provides its members with a plethora of self-paced competitive advantages that they can leverage when entering or navigating the workforce.

As a subsidiary of SHRM national, our student members become part of a vast network of over 300,000 professional members in over 165 countries. Students are also provided with an opportunity to prepare for the SHRM-CP certification, which in itself is often heralded as being equally if not more valuable than a bachelor’s degree in HR and is comparable to the accounting CPA certification. We also provide valuable networking opportunities with actual employers, including a variety of HR practitioners as well as managers. SHRM students also graduate with exclusive blue and silver cords to add to their regalia.

SHRM provided students with appropriate attire for the Career EXPO and for upcoming job interviews.

With regard to our activities, SHRM hosts a variety of workshops including resume reviews, guest speakers that cover a specific topic or issue within HR, informative seminars, site-visits, and more. One of our most salient events is the Professional Clothing Drive, whereby we collect professional clothing throughout the year and provide it for all WT students at no cost at an annual event in the JBK. The timing of this event is in synchronization with Career Services, whom we collaborate with often. We also provide a space in which students can shop through these clothing items year-round, and have recently began providing free tailored designer suit rentals.
