Student Organization Spotlight – Accounting & Finance Association

The WTAMU Accounting & Finance Association (AFA) is a student led organization with a mission to advance the study of accounting and finance by providing students opportunities to personally interact with community professionals and learn about careers in the accounting and finance fields.  Many of the community speakers hosted by AFA are alumni of WTAMU who help students relate their coursework to the skills needed in the real world.

The AFA works closely with the WTAMU Career Services team to recruit speakers that sponsor qualified internships for students. The AFA recently partnered with the WTAMU Financial Planning Association to host joint meetings and facilitate a virtual speaker series via Skype in order to expand access outside of the region to professionals in the area of personal finance.

Finally, as a service organization, the AFA participates in an annual service project where student members volunteer their time to do outreach in the local community. Last year, as part of the Texas State Society of CPA’s month of service, the AFA joined forces with the Panhandle Chapter of CPA’s to sort food for Snack-Pack for Kids in Canyon. The two groups prepared enough “snack packs” to cover all of the participating schools in the Canyon ISD district.

The organization hosts two meetings (with lunch provided) each month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays during the Fall and Spring semesters. Officers for the 2019-2020 academic year are President – James Hancock, Vice President – Keri Smith, Secretary – Sandra Chairez, Treasurer –Canon Brown, Membership Coordinator – Kendall Boaz, and Marketing Director – Logan Johnson.

For more information, contact an AFA faculty sponsor: Karen Cooley or David Clark. The first AFA meeting for the Fall 2019 semester will be September 11, 2019 at 12:15pm in Classroom Center Room 221.
